What is CCS1?

The plug, the current, the car

CCS1 is the DC fast connector on most non-Tesla EVs in North America. It keeps the J1772 shape for the AC pins and adds two DC pins underneath.

CCS1 stations are the backbone of public fast charging for cars from Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Volvo and others. The station and the car negotiate the rate, so a 350 kW charger does not mean every car will take 350 kW.

A CCS1 station can also carry a J1772 connector for slower charging; the directory lists each connector separately, so a station can appear in both sets. Tesla drivers need a CCS1 adapter where the station supports one.

What the label means

CCS1 is not the same as CCS2, the European version. The two use different plug shapes and do not connect without an adapter.

Where CCS1 stations are

The states with the most stations listing CCS1. Each link opens that state's page; the directory keeps the connector filter for a narrower view.

Cities with the most

The cities where these stations cluster. A link opens the city's own guide where one exists, otherwise the directory around that city.

Counts are stations that list CCS1, not plugs. One station can carry several connector types, so a station can appear here and in another connector's count. Prices are the networks' own per-kWh tariffs and can change by time of day. Counts from the directory data of October 2026.

CCS1 questions

Fit, power and price

How many CCS1 charging stations are there?

EVDIR lists 930 public stations with CCS1 across 21 states and 617 cities, with 3,411 charging stalls. 740 of them are DC fast (50 kW or more), and 218 reach 150 kW or more.

What is a CCS1 connector?

CCS1 is the DC fast connector on most non-Tesla EVs in North America. It keeps the J1772 shape for the AC pins and adds two DC pins underneath. CCS1 is not the same as CCS2, the European version. The two use different plug shapes and do not connect without an adapter.

Which cars use CCS1?

Most non-Tesla EVs built after 2018. Fast charging on a longer trip. The connector a car accepts is fixed by its inlet; an adapter may be needed for a different standard, and support varies by vehicle and station.

How much does CCS1 charging cost?

Of the 764 stations that quote a per-kWh price, the median is $0.49 and 201 charge $0.40 or less. Networks set their own tariffs, and some add a session or idle fee.

Are CCS1 stations always fast chargers?

No label guarantees a rate. Typically 50–350 kW; the station and the vehicle negotiate the actual charge. Check the station's peak power in the directory before relying on it for a quick stop.
