What is NEMA 14-50?

The plug, the current, the car

NEMA 14-50 is a 240-volt outlet, not a charging connector. A station that lists it expects you to bring a portable EVSE and plug in.

The outlet is the same four-pin shape used by many RVs and ranges. At 50 A it can supply up to 40 A continuously, which is enough to add meaningful range overnight, but the car's onboard charger and the portable EVSE still set the real rate.

Because it is an outlet rather than a tethered charger, a NEMA 14-50 listing can be less predictable than a J1772 post: check the access notes and bring the right cable. The directory counts it as a connector because that is how the report records it.

What the label means

Do not treat a NEMA 14-50 outlet as a DC fast charger. It is AC Level 2 charging with your own equipment.

Networks with the most

Counts are stations that list NEMA 14-50, not plugs. One station can carry several connector types, so a station can appear here and in another connector's count. Prices are the networks' own per-kWh tariffs and can change by time of day. An outlet count is the site's, not a count of charging stalls, so this page quotes stations rather than stalls. Counts from the directory data of October 2026.
