EV charging speeds, band by band

A public charger's speed decides what it is good for: an overnight top-up, a working day, or a twenty-minute stop on a long drive. These are the three bands the directory records.

Questions

How these pages are built

What is the difference between Level 2 and DC fast charging?

Level 2 is AC charging under 50 kW, adding roughly 10 to 40 miles of range an hour; it suits a car parked for an hour or more. DC fast is 50 kW or more, and a 150 kW site can add a substantial charge in twenty minutes. The connector at a DC site is usually CCS1, NACS or CHAdeMO rather than J1772.

How fast is a 150 kW charger?

A station rated at 150 kW or more is the fastest band in this directory. What a car actually accepts is the other half of the equation: a 350 kW station will only deliver the power the vehicle asks for, so the station record's peak is a ceiling, not a promise.

Do the three bands add up to the directory?

No. Level 2 and DC fast are disjoint, but the 150 kW+ band is a subset of DC fast, so adding all three counts the fastest stations twice. The directory's total is the number to use for the size of the site.

Can I filter the directory by charging speed?

Yes, with a minimum-power filter. The directory can show stations at 50 kW or more and at 150 kW or more; it cannot isolate Level 2, because a minimum of 0 kW shows everything. Each band page links the filter it can reproduce.
