A model with several battery sizes has one starting price and one range for its cheapest version, not an average across the range. “Top version” is the dearest version in the same model year — the spread between the two is what the options cost, not a different car.
The method
How the ranking is built
One number per car
Each model contributes its cheapest version in its listed model year. A car with six trims enters the ranking once, at the bottom of its own range, so a loaded launch edition cannot push a cheap car up the list.
The sheet's own range
The per-mile figure divides a version's list price by that version's rated range from the same sheet. The EPA figure the model page publishes is a different source and is never mixed in — a ratio built from two sources is one nobody can reproduce.
List price, stated plainly
No figure here includes sales tax, destination, options or an incentive, and none is presented as a quote. That is why the page says list price beside every table, and why the cheapest car here is not automatically the cheapest car you can buy.
A starting price is half of what a car costs to run. The other half is the tariff it charges at, which the public charging price index tracks quarter by quarter, and which the state cost table breaks down place by place.
Questions about EV prices
List prices, not quotesWhat is the cheapest electric car in the US?
The Nissan Leaf is the cheapest electric model with a US list price here, from $29,990 for the 2026 model year. That is a manufacturer's list price before sales tax, destination and any incentive, and it is the cheapest version of the car — the ranking uses each model's lowest-priced version so a loaded trim cannot hide a cheap entry.
What is the cheapest electric car with 300 miles of range?
The Nissan Leaf, from $29,990, is the lowest-priced model here whose cheapest version is rated for 300 miles or more. The page's budget lab shows the same crossover at any budget: the 300-mile line is the first car in price order that clears it.
How is price per mile of range worked out?
It is the cheapest version's list price divided by that same version's rated range, in miles. It stays inside the price sheet's own numbers rather than borrowing the EPA range, because the two ranges disagree on some cars and a ratio that mixed them would be a figure nobody could reproduce. The median is shown so a car above or below the crowd is easy to spot.
Are these prices after tax and incentives?
No. Every figure is a manufacturer list price before sales tax, destination and delivery charges, options and any federal or state incentive. A dealer's number will differ, and an incentive can move the effective price well below the list — the state-by-state rebate guide covers what is still available.
What is the cheapest electric SUV?
The Hyundai Kona Electric is the cheapest SUV-shaped model here, from $32,975. The cheapest pickup is the Ford F-150 Lightning, from $49,875. Body type is the manufacturer's own classification, so a raised hatchback can be filed as an SUV.
Why are some electric cars missing from this ranking?
The price sheet does not list every model the catalogue covers — 62 of them carry a US list price here, and the rest are either older models no longer on sale or cars the sheet does not include. A model without a list price is left out rather than estimated, and its own page says whether a price is available.
What to do with a price
